You can just stick them in the head with the oil, it's not going to harm anything.. If you got some air out, then they should be fine.. I never opened up the oil port, so it was sort of a "gravity bleed," if you will.. The key that was always impressed up with me, was to get the air out of them.. With air in them, they're no long Hydraulic Lash Adjusters, simply lash adjusters.. Provided you have a decent lubrication system, and aduequate oil pressure, if there is any residual air in them, it will be forced out fairly quickly, upon turning the engine over..

Just, whatever you do.... PRIME YOUR ENGINE before you try to start it for the first time... If you don't, it can cause some premature damage to things like your followers and HLAs, and even the cam...

I heard of priming the engine, but I never did it or even seen it done. What exactly does it mean?
I'm sure, as most folks do when tearing down an engine, they remove the oil as a standard measure.. Well, over time, all of the oil that usually stays in passages, drains out, and now you have a completely dry engine.. Good for doing maintenance, BAD for trying to start and run a car that hasn't seen any action for a while.. Priming an engine is a way of filling the lubricating system, and pressurizing it, prior to actually starting and running the car.. Without doing this, a lot of premature wear can occur and severely damage some of those new components you just put in..

I know on cars with a standard coil pack or distributor, you just disconnect the ignitor cable, and crank the engine a few times. I believe on a car with COPs, you disconnect each COP's plug (green and white wire I believe on the 4.6), and crank the engine a few times... I never had to do it on my Mustang, so I can't be much more help than that, but there are other folks who have done this 100 times on here...

I don't have COP's, but I just unplug my coils so that no spark can be created to start the engine, and turn and it over a few times.

Well, the manual says to not mix the HLAs up and does not say anything about bleeding them out or anything. But oh well, I'm doing it my way [sm=idontcare.gif]

Ugh, I ran into a nice problem... The guy I bought it from stripped the crank threads and the bolt for the pulley. I have another bolt for it but hopefully I will be able to run a tap in the crank... Before I put the heads on, I have to turn the crank 90 degrees so the pistons are out of the way? Then turn back to TDC? The manual is confusing...

Well, as long as the cam is at TDC when installed in the heads, you shouldn't have to turn the crank at all, provided it was at TDC when you tore everything apart.. At least that's how I've always done it...

That sucks about the stripped Crank pulley hole btw..

Everything I've read says turn the crank to 9 to be in "safe mode" where all the pistons are below the deck... I say thats bull****. I've always put the number 1 cylinder at TDC and left it there.... Took the heads off and did not touch the crank. Always worked for me.... but thats just how I was taught.

I did not take it apart.. You guys think a tap will clean up the threads good enough to work? The bolt does not even start (I think he used a puller to get the pulley off and screwed up the first couple threads).

Aaah.. I see.. Okay, well, in terms of getting everything lined up, you should be able to get the bottom end at TDC fairly easily.. Once you do that, if you feel safer rotating the engine 90 degrees, then go ahead.. I can't imagine they'd tell you that if it wasn't safe.. I'd index things with either some white-out or a crayon, just to be sure..

As for the crank threading, a tap should clean it up.. Just be very careful, and use a little bit (just a dot) of oil, and slowly start the threading.. You should nail it..
