What parts would I have to replace? I'm planning on replacing the cams and the heads and driveshaft. Not sure what else would be needed to replace if ya'll could help me. And I found a 2001 Cobra but it's just too expensive on my current budget... but who knows, maybe I can get one

If you want to make 12 seconds on a budget, nitrous and suspension work is the best way possible.

Get a set of sticky tires, switch springs, add spray... and you'll be there EASY for less than $2000 on top of the car.

This isn't the best for a fast street car either though, if you want a fast street car you'll either be filling lots of nitrous bottles at ~$50 each, or you should just invest in boost. Centrifugal superchargers can be had very cheap (LOOK ON EBAY! wait to find a lightly used kit, my friend got a P1-SC with intercooler, complete kit for $1200, retails for $4800). They don't make the most fun power curve though. A twin screw (kenne bell) would be better, but will cost a lot more.

You don't need to go *****-out on any of these parts, as nice as it would be. The small Kenne Bell will still push more boost than your stock bottom end will ever handle, as will the base level centrifugal superchargers. As a general rule, keep the boost below 11 psi or so, and/or keep the horsepower around 400 at the wheels and it SHOULD hold together. (EDIT: Your engine is the real weak link, the transmission, driveshaft, and rear end will all hold up just fine at 400rwhp, the transmission is the next weak point, assuming it's a manual, the automatics are a bit stronger).

What I'm confused about, you couldn't afford gas on the v6, but you have enough money available to consider dropping $10,000+ to build a drag car...? A fast car is pointless if you can't drive it. We have a 380 rwhp v6 built totally for $8000 including the price of the car, all parts brand new (motor, trans, 8.8 rear end, supercharger), the only part with the original 140k miles is the body. Either way, it's still a v6, and it's still centrifugally supercharged, while we make 10 psi at 6000 rpm, when we shift, we're back down at 4psi and the car feels slow till we hit ~5200 rpm again, and have to shift at 6k. It's not as fun as other boost methods, but it sure is fast.

Drop me a PM with any specific questions you may have.

Hey guys, I went up to the shop to take another look at the Mustang and came across a 97 Cobra. I was looking up drag times and the 99-04 Mustangs have the same drag time as the 97 Cobra (( Stock )). And I kinda like the likes of the 99-04 Mustangs then the 97 model. But just curious can the 97 Cobra be faster with certain mods? And could the Cobra hold together better (( with higher grade mods )) or would it be cheaper / almost exactly the same as to just buy the 2002 Mustang GT?

hey man, since your main goal is speed and getting in the 11-12 second range, I'm just gonna be honest with ya - a mustang is not the car to buy. Just save yourself the money, time, and hassle, and buy an LS1 car - meaning a 98-02 camaro z28 or ss or a trans am (aim for a 2000 and up as they have better intake manifolds and put down a little more hp) - while you will be making like 230 rwhp with your stock 99-04 GT, stock trans am's have been known to put down 300-320 rwhp - with just a good somewhat hot street cam, headers, and an intake lid, you'll be putting down around 360-370 rwhp. Buy the rest of the bolt ons, have it dyno tuned, and gear it a little lower and the car will be making an EASY 400 rwhp - and this is not including spray. This option is a lot less expensive than trying to buy a kenne bell as well. You can find an 00 or 01 Z28 with like 70k miles (not a lot for an ls1) for like 7-8 grand in good shape if you look around. with the mods i said, you will easily be running low 12's and possibly a high 11 if you buy some good drag radials with that kind of power. I'm probably gonna get ripped on this forum for saying that but If you just want a practical way to run 11's and 12's and get better gas mileage than a sc'd 4.6L, i'd personally just buy the LS1. And i own a bullitt mustang so I'm not trying to hate on mustangs, i love mine for what it is. it looks great, handles good, and its pretty quick. but my dad let me buy it after saying "youre not getting an ls1, its just way too fast" - if all you care about is speed and youre on a budget, an LS1 should be a strong option.

I hate to say it but he is right. I love my Mustang but I know that it cannot hang with a trans am. I knew that when I bought my car but it didn't matter to me because I just like Mustangs. If you want something thats just fast and you don't want spend a lot of money on a Cobra then the best way would be a Trans am or Camaro.
