Default Snow/Ice Causing Ugly Drivetrain Vibrations

I don't know if the feeling is actual wheel hop, but it feels like the rear of the car could be hopping around, the car shudders, and I get a violent shake through the gear shifter.

It only recently started happening sometimes when I break traction in the snow. I've had the car in the winter for a few months now, but never in this much snow/wintery conditions.

*edit*

It's only happening at lower speeds, especially in 1st when I attempt to begin moving.

Could extra snow packed in the wheels/underbody/suspension components be causing this nasty vibration/hop?

I also added 240 pounds to the trunk the other day and I hadn't noticed it prior to this. Any correlation?

Thanks,

man get that stang out of the snow and buy a beater. Last time I drove the GT in the snow and ice I almost didnt make it home. I guess 315 nittos lowered on coilovers dont help very much.

hey man, ive drove my car for 6 winters now without a problem on blizzaks. i think what your feeling is really bad wheel hop. i get it everyonce in a while but i got it a lot worse with my all season tires vs my blizzaks. but just to be safe try to find a place youcan park your car over night or for a day in a warm garage. try to get all the snow out of your tires and suspension and driveline.

I felt like it was wheelhop as well. There's no where I can park my car right now, and I have a good 40 minute drive each way during the week for student teaching.

I'll have to wait until we get out of the single digits/- lows and try to get her washed/cleaned up underneath and in the wheels.

Any other suggestions?

I went to the car wash and sprayed out the wheels/tire wells as best as possible.

Still does it a bit.

This is on dry pavement, or on snow/ice glazed pavement or both (I realize you said when you break traction in the snow)?? If it's on both, then it's more than likely not wheel hop, since I don't know too many tires that will grip the snow and ice like that.. Regardless, how are your U-Joints?? Is there any snow/ice built up in the pockets around the U-joints??

It's just on ice/snow when it wants to try and break free or actually does break free.

I havent gotten a chance to look up under any further than actually in the wheel well. Sub zero tepms and -30 wind chills have kept me inside for the last few days.

Just remember that the smallest amount of ice on the inside of your rims can throw off the balance. Think of it this way the little wheel weight are measured in Ounces I'm sure a nice piece of Ice/Snow weighs more than that.

im guessing it is probably something to do with the wheels or suspension

if you get some time after school on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday stop by discount and we can jack it up and pull the wheels off and check everything out
