Default 02 gt 3650 problem

bought my 02 with 71K for a good deal because the second gear grinds when you put it in but only when you try to shft and not the the rpm fall. its fine at low speeds and all other gears work perfect.. i assume its a syncro? and also its only a daily since i have a built fox so would you guys reccomend just reaplacing the scrynco or going for a rebuilt unit?? only performence that it will get is probly exhaust.

Sounds like the 2nd gear synchro is toast which is extremely common with 3650.
If it's been doing that for a while I would just replace it with a good used/rebuilt one.

They've all done that from almost new. I'd say just live with it. Its not really that big of a deal to go through all that hastle and money just to fix that. Mine does that and the tranny only has 40,000 miles. So just live with it if its a dd. If you were gonna start throwing power at it, i would say just buy a better tranny but you arent doing performance mods to it.

It's a common problem, if you can drive it without it grinding, do what you have to do, or if you can skip shift from 1st to 3rd do that.

A rebuilt 3650 would run you in the area of $1500 for parts & labor depending on the shops in your area.

There's a TSB about that problem, here's the fix, or at least it will help it:

drain and refill the transmission with EXACTLY 3.2 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF or Ford Mercon V. The original fill level was 4 quarts, and contributes to the problem. The easiest way to make sure you've done exactly 3.2 quarts for me was to take the shifter out and pour it in through the top, that fill hole is a bit of a pain to get an exact amount in.
