engine noise

Next exactly the correct definition of pre-detonation. All engines have explosions before TDC. Pre-detonation is when chamber temps are too hot and ignite the air/fuel mixture in multiple places and those flame fronts collide with each other which is what makes the pinging sound you hear.

MY CAR HAD A PINGING SOUND. IT SOUNDED LIKE SOME ONE TAPPING ON MY HEADERS. IT TURN OUT TO BE MY #3 SPARK PLUG BACKING OUT AND DESTROYING MY COP AND SCREWING UP THE THREADS IN THE HEAD. THANKS FORD..

If it sounds like it might be an exhaust leak, check ALL of your spark plugs. I thought I had an exhaust leak and I checked all of the exhaust bolts and connections and couldn't find anything. Until one day..*boom* the spark plug finally backed out enough to blow out of the cylinder head. A tow and a heli coil later I learned a lesson. If it's a 2001 though you shouldn't have that prob since they started cutting 8 threads in 2001. Just something to check though.
