i had to rebuild a stolen car (civic si) a couple years ago for my gf, had to reset the clock cause they stole the cluster and the one she bought off ebay had 70,000 more miles then the car did when it got stolen.

there was a rachet system to the gears that prevented it from being spun backwards.

i ended up using a dremel to cut off the small rivets, then manually removing the wheels and gears and putting it back together, then i solderd a glob on top of the rivet studs to reattach it...

but im the McGuyver stoner... "i need a snorkel, an avacado, and some duct tape... trust me man, i've made bongs with less"

no one can tell you what to do to your car. F*** the man.
i helped a friend do the same change the mileage on an odometer he got from a junk on a mazda car. we just spun it forward till it went to zero then set his miles that were actually on the car.

Look, it isnt completely illegal to change the mileage.. In the days of mechanical gauges if you had to replace a cluster, you got a sticker with it that you wrote the original mileage on and placed it in the door jam. If you want to reset the odometer, get a sticker and put the correct mileage on it (at the time of removal)

by the time im done with it, i will have too much invested in my eyes, as opposed to what i could get for it, unless it becomes valuable being an SVT in 20 years and barret jackson can sell it for me for an obscene price. Depends how life goes but if im not in a finacial sitation where i have to sell my car, i probably won't.
