I once moved mine back a bit with a screw driver without damaging anything. But yea... it isnt a crime as long as you disclose the information when you sell it... damn noobs.

Yes it may be a felony to do it to rip someone off, but you can still sell the car legally. It will just be permenanty branded with a TMU which mean true milage unknown

Default Resetting Odometers

I have reset two of my Mustang speedos for the express purpose of making it reflect the current mileage on the car. Speedometer shops selling new units will do the same thing. Even new ECU's have to be reflashed with the current mileage on the old unit.

I see nothing wrong with that and there is no intent to defraud anyone about the actual mileage of the car. If anything it ensures that the potential future buyer of the car will buy it with an accurate odometer reading. One time I waited until the old speedo reached the same mileage on the donor unit and then put the donor in, again to reflect the true mileage of the car. I think resetting the unit when you rebuild the motor or restore the car is kind of a lame excuse though.

It's interesting to note that on this forum and several others the passion that some people have about changing their odometer reading but have no problem modifying exhaust and engine parts in violation of state and federal law.
