Are you SURE you're starting out in second? If you are at a dead stop, and put it in 2, if you are in second, you will have to rev to about 3500 rpms just to get the car moving. If this is the case, then, I guess you have something I've never seen before outside of a shift kit. But if you put it in second, and you rev to about 1500 and it takes off just fine, you're in first, mate. Let me know! I learn something new everyday too...lol

However, before my tranny started crapping itself, it would start and stay in second... In fact, I thought that was kinda convenient, in the event I finally get the car off the ground w/ some good mods, I could start in 2nd to reduce wheel spin/shifts, because 1st gears is way too short in the Autos...

Well, slap me in the face and call me Susan.--I've rebuilt a few transmissions myself, and I'd never heard of that. Perhaps it's your transmission, perhaps you have a shift kit installed? Whatever the reason, at least you can control it manually! I've certainly never been able to do that in any automatic. But hell, I'm always open to having the world turned upside down on me, so maybe there's something more to it.

It's possible the car had some other mods done to it before I got it. I bought it w/ 67k miles on it.. The intake silencer was removed, and the tranny does shift pretty quickly/firmly..
Besides that, I had to have the rear end rebuild after 100k miles, and that's w/ me never doing burnouts or donuts, or major abuse...
I don't think I had gotten a bad Mustang.. I mean, the spider gears had chunks missing and the bearings on the carrier were worn badly w/ a little scarring.. Plus there was thick black junk in the pumpkin (My father thinks it was Bardo)..
Plus it had aftermarket mufflers when I bought it.. Don't know what brand.. So it could have been anything..

RE: shifting with an auto
Whenever i try manually shifting my auto from 1st to 2nd, my first gear sometimes hits the rev limiter and i will have to let off gas for it to shift in second...I dont know why but if i let it stay in drive it never does it. Also when manually shifting u start in 1st and upshift to second (most ppl dont know this) when it does downshift back to 1st that is your second gear and then upshift to 2nd for 3rd gear. that is the correct way to manuallly shift an automatic. Maybe u knew it or not just thought i would help out.... lol
