That is normal for a T-45. Reverse is not schronized. In older transmissions first was not schronized so you had to shift to second before you shifted to first.

nope yours is not junk (unless it pops out of gear by itself while you are driving. then its going bad) what works a lot of times is put it in 1st gear then go to reverse.
