Battery light turns on when I open it up?

My battery light on the dash recently started turning on when I lay on the gas, usually around 5k RPM. Any ideas?

Start simple and replace the belt with a good one like a gatorback or something. It's a cheap item that I am sure needs replacing anyways. I know mine does. While you are replacing it, it never hurts to pull the alternator off and have it tested free of charge when you go buy the belt!

I would check the belt tension first.

Yup.... sounds like a belt is slipping and you have some load on alternator.

Charge light coming on @ 5K

On my 97 Taurus, the same thing was happening, but gradually over a year or so, it got steadily worse and finally it was coming on at less than 3000 RPM. What I found was the field slip rings in the alternator were worn. I took the alternator armature to a alternator rebuild shop and they installed new slip rings for about $30. Problem solved. BTW, I also tried a new belt first.....no help.
