Step One --Go to the local dollar store buy a bottle of Black Magic Tire Wet.
Step Two -- Open the hood.
Step Three -- Spray everything under there real good.
Step Four -- Close the hood, start the engine and let it run 10-15 minutes.
Step Five -- Open the hood wipe of the excess and your done.

That will be $20 dollars please!

LIke other said, whenever I wash my engine of any car, I cover few electronic parts with plastic bags and never had any issue. Ive washed my 2010 tacoma's engine several times and recently washed my 2001 mustang gt's engine without any problem. It even recommends in the owners manual to wash your engine and how to wash it.

I have always washed my mustangs motors from time to time. I had the same problem on my 2000 gt, but i did have everything covered. I had the same flashing check engine light, its cause by a problem with a cop. Just either take them off and dry them off along with the hole that the actual plug sits in, or continue to let the car idle which should help to continue evaporation. I used compressed air to blow the water droplets out to the area around the spark plug. My problem cleared up the following day and i didn't have to replace a coil. I have washed the engine one other time since then and had no issues at all, i was a lot more cautious the second time around.

step Six -- enjoy the dust that becomes sloppy goop after not cleaning it and just putting tire shine on a dirty surface....

Armor All or tire shine works great on black plastic or any rubber hoses to shine them up. otherwise id use simple green and a rag/brush to get dirt off.

i dont like cleaning/waxing then leaving the engine dirty as hell lol. next to a freshly washed/waxed black car, a clean shined engine bay is the best. IMO

a safe bet to just get dirt and grime off would be a spray bottle filled with warm water, toothbrush, and a rag

Don't sweat it too much. I washed my engine in my Cobra, and it ran like crap afterward. Take a shop-vac and vaccuum out the spark plug holes, and it'll probably fix your problem.

Next time you clean your engine bay, use simple green, a toothbrush, and a rag. Clean what you can, and use a MINIMAL amount of water. If you're smart about where you spray, you can use the hose, but you really don't have to. Anyway, there's no reason to be afraid of cleaning your motor... you just have to use your head when you do it.
