Hmm I washed my 5.0L and my 4.6 and never had any issues. One of them I washed while the engine was warm and running and the other I washed while it was off and covered the elctrical parts. Can't remember which was which, but one of them the car ran poorly for a few hours until everything completely dried out.

+1 go to autozone and get yourself a can of cd2 engine detailer and spray it up. wipe excess. a toothbrush and simple green works if you want to get in there good

Most detailers say simple green is the worst thing to use on an engine. That say it stains metal surfaces and can badly fade and ruin any plastics. I always wondered why mine looked so dingy till I sprayed on the detailer. Now I let the motor cool and mix up some type of citrus of all purpose cleaner with water and spray everything and let it soak. Use tooth brush and maybe a wheel brush to clean everything possible. The just rinse and dry and use what ever detailer you prefer. I cover alternator and my cops mainly. I take off my alternator since it's so easy and clean it with a wire wheel on adrill
