Help identify engine noise?
Hi all, I have a stock 2002 Mustang GT, and I started hearing this noise recently: engine.mp3
It sounds kind of like this but changes pitch(?) when I rev the engine:

I plan to take it in to the dealer, but the last time it took a week to diagnose and replace a vacuum hose problem and I'm dreading being without my car for that long since it's my only vehicle.
If I can help steer the dealer toward the likely problem then maybe I can get my car repaired faster. Thanks for your help.

could just be the belt, sometimes things can get cause between them and the pulley and make that noise, one thing to eliminate that possibility, is bet a bar of soap, any bar, and run it on the underside of the belt, if it goes away, its the belt or something on it, if not... something else... next...

Thanks guys. It was the belt. I had them check the brakes while I took the car in too, and both the front and rear need to be done, and one of the rear rotors needs to be replaced since it has developed a lip on it that couldn't be fixed. About $500 for everything. The car is at about 62k miles and has never had the brakes done before, so I guess it's due (although I asked about the brakes before and was told that they were fine every time, I guess I've been braking more recently .

that was pretty expensive, a do it yourself issue for sure, and could have done it for half the price. look into some self labor, get a haynes book and use the internet...your wallet will thank you. i'd say even with my cobra, i could have done it for 300 myself in 2hrs. Glad you got if fixed though, i'm sure its a nice relief.
