cooling fan won't turn on but tests good
Ok so basucally I thought my cooling fan went out because my car was overheating and the fan wouldnt turn on (even with ac on) but when I pulled it out yesterday and hooked it to a battery it started spinning. I also replaced the water pump and thermostat and put new coolant in yesterday. So my next thought is my wiring is jacked up. I can't think of anything else. Oh by the way it worked for a few minutes when i put it back in after messing with the wires in the fender well so I think there might be a short there. But tonigt i pulled the plastic shielding off the wires from where it hooks into the fan all the way back to by the ecm or whatever it is in the fenderwell. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Seems like there should be a coolant temperature sensor somewhere. It should control when the fan kicks on. Find that sensor and try to trace it back the fan because there may also be a relay in between that's not functioning.
If someone has a schematic, please chime in.

Check your relay, then check the coolant temp sensor. If it actually is faulty wiring you can easily rewire a new switch and bypass all of your existing wiring. Also, how long did you leave the fan running when you hooked it up to your battery? You may have overheating issues with the electric motor. Try running it for a long period of time at full rpms. Good luck

where is the realy? it cant be the temp sensor because the fan should kick on automatically when the ac is turned on and it doesnt. also is a ccrm year specific or are they interchangeable?
thanks.
thanks.

The fan will kick on when the engine gets to a certain temperature, and/or in a given mph range. Turning the A/C on should kick on the fan also, if it wasn't already running. Some cars have two small fans, and in that case, the A/C would probably kick the second one on.

Here's the wiring diagram for the engine cooling fan.
It is completely controlled by the PCM, through the CCRM (which are the same for '00-'04, and seem to be the same for '98 and '99).
The device on the fan shroud contains a ballast resistor and fusible link. The link will open if the resistor overheats, and resets when it cools, however if either component burns out the fan will not run in low speed. This component is not shown on the wiring diagram as it is considered part of the fan assembly.
Also, check the 50A fuse #1 in the battery junction box. If intermittent it could cause the problem you have observed.
