Before you wash your engine next time, go spend $30 on an electric leaf blower at Home Depot or Lowe's or whatever. I wash my engine with the same soap and water solution as the rest of the car (after the car is washed) about once a month, and blow the engine compartment dry with said leaf blower, giving a little extra attention to the cop's (takes me like 5 or 10 minutes), before starting the engine. I know a lot of people swear against spraying your engine down with water (and for good reason), but if you make sure that sensitive areas like the cop's are completely dry you shouldn't have any problems.
