99 Saleen S281 - Should I buy???

RE: 99 Saleen S281 - Should I buy???
I'm sorry! I don't know if it's a speedster or a vert - once again, I don't even know what that means - please tell me the difference and if I don't know I will find out... I am sorry for my lack of knowledge... I did start thinking that the price may be too high for just a "fun" car considering my dumb suv is perfectly capable of getting me around (but not fun!) I would consider it around 18-20K though - I have another question... Is this a car that will retain some value? From what I looked up it looks like in '99 the car probably sold for 40-45K - so obviously it's taken a pretty big hit in depreciation but will it depreciate much more say, in the next 5 years?
Hubby would probably do some minor mods to it, but nothing too crazy...

RE: 99 Saleen S281 - Should I buy???
The list price on the original car was 32,790$ plus options. The actual options on the car are 3.55 gears, chrome rims and sportbar. It is not listed as a speedster. This car will hold it's value better than a mustang gt, and has flattened out quite a bit. It all comes down to what you could buy the car for. If you could buy the car for 19k, it wouldn't go down too much more in a couple years. So, it's a good investment if you could buy it right. In the CPI Kelly black book, the car is worth around 19k, + or -. I would start to work on the dealer about value. The car also exists in the NADA specialty book. These will give you more leverage with the dealer on price. I would start to beat them up on a few points. The car was made in early 99, and the ship date was 4/15/99. So it is an early 99, not a late model 99. That would make it worth a little less. Also, take a good look at the tires. If they are less than 50%, I would beat them up over that. Also, tell them you have been looking at Saleens across the country, and have seen some pretty good deals. Tell them, "I'd prefer to buy locally, but I want the best deal on a Saleen I can get." This will let them know you are doing some homework. Go buy a 'mustang trader' magazine, and bring it into the dealership. Show them that their car is overpriced. They may just jump right down to a 'reasonable' price level. Also, beat them up over the fact that the car is out of warranty. I'm sure they will come down some.
