Dash Lights

Dash Lights
I'm hoping some one can help me out, here's what i got:
1997 Ford Mustang GT Coupe convertible, 4.6L V8 automatic
My car has headlights and dash lights that turn on automatically when it gets dark out. The other day the light selector **** was in the auto position and the headlights and dash lights were on. Then all of a sudden the dash lights went out but the headlamps stayed on. If I used a turn signal or took my seat belt off the appropriate lights would illuminate but every thing else was dark. I pulled the light selector **** to the manual on position and the dash lights came back on. Any ideas on why they won't go on in the auto on position?

It's most likely that there is an open wire, or broken ground, someplace; and when the signal or seatbelt reminder come on they are back-feeding the dash illumination circuit.
You'll need to get the electrical diagrams for your car and start doing point-to-point tests to find the open/shorted wire--a close visual inspection of all related harnesses and exposed wiring may reveal something as well...
