Default Air filter in the fender

I bought a 2001 Mustang GT awhile back and today my friend and I were going to clean the air filter, we unscrewed all the bolts and we couldnt get the filter out from the fender. It's a K&N Cai, I was like WTF how did the previous owner install it? Anyways do I have to pull the fender off to get to the filter?

I have the JLT CAI with the filter in the fender.I just jack up the front of the car and I have no problem lying on my back and getting access to the filter. No you do not have to remove the fender, nobody would buy one if that was the case.
