How do you plan on painting them? do you have the paint? your probably gunna wanna sand them down until their smooth, maybe use some body filler to cover any major scratches or holes, apply primer, sand again, apply paint, apply clearcoat.

i hope you dont plan on a rattle can spray job?

make sure their smooth, otherwise the color wont seem to match. the little texture will add a lot of shadow, making the color seem darker. not to mention, if its not smooth, it will look a little odd. once there smooth, primer, color, clearcoat. best bet is actually spray gunning it although u can probably get close with rattle cans... wont be as nice though.

what i have found that acutally makes the difference between rattle can and spray gun is the clear. you can rattle can the color coat but when you try and rattle can the clear it just dosen't work. you cant get enough material on there and have it disperse enough to look right.

i was planning on painting not rattle canning and just got some wet sand paper today thanks for the advice on that. They looked half way smooth i figured that they would be ok to just paint, but i guess not.

i'd def sand them first... paint isnt meant to be a filler of any kinda. i would also prime them with a good primer so you dont have to worry about the paint peelin or flaking off.

prep is the key to any good paint job.

That's when you go and wet sand and polish. Do it all the time... I can wet sand them and polish them like 15-20 hours after Painting.
This is with dupli color acrylic lacquer and acrylic enamel. Oh and note DO NOT EVER buy dupi color ACRYLIC ENAMEL(the stuff in the BLACK CAN) You want the stuff in the (blue can) acrylic lacquer. I really don't want to go in to detail on why to not buy the acrylic enamel but trust me don't, It doesn't work well.
Start with 1500 grit and finish up with a piece of new 1500 grit that's been crinkled to ****, after that wash the part(s) and buff with scratch remover and then wax them..... (Use micro fibers)

(another example)

After

^bummer, all that work on the intake tube and you're still sucking in hot engine bay air...

Nice work on the painting, I've done my fair share and it all looks dandy until the clearing time comes. On dark colors it either builds up and looks white-ish or not enough gets on.
