I went to autozone and was told my 02 pi heads needed double platinum or better so whats the deal here?? The plugs were $8 each!!!! They also told me that NGK wasnt a good plug to use but why did MSD team up with NGK on the ignition upgrade system in summit racing and jegs mags!!!

They are correct if you are going to be using your '98's stock EDIS (coil-pack) wasted spark ignition.

As listed above, although the '02 came from the factory with Motorcraft AWSF-32P plugs--one "P" indicating single platinum--that was for use with the single polarity COP ignition system.

The EDIS ignition in your '98 is a wasted spark dual polarity setup which requires double platinum plugs such as the recommended AWSF-32PP (two "P"s = double platinum) units.

Here's more about wasted spark ignition systems.

The bit about the NGK is just typical irrational bias, basically all spark plugs are the same, with two major groupings--conventional using tungsten or nickel/chrome alloy "fat" electrodes, and fine wire using platinum or iridium precious metal electrodes.

You can read more about spark plugs here; a report I prepared for Weapon X--though I do not use their plugs.

In my '03 GT I run Champion single platinum stock # 3401; $2.99 a pop at Advance Auto; you can get Champion double platinum, stock # 7963 for $3.49 each. I use Champions in just about everything we own, if there were any better way to make a spark plug Champion would have figured it out in the 106 years they have been making them.
