cam position sensor - alt and CPS already replaced
#11
sorry to bring this back up guys but i'm still having the problem. sorry for this being so long. i tested for current at the wires connecting to the CPS and found no current so i peeled back the wire loom and electrical tape and found this tin foil looking stuff along with a random wire wrapped around the two CPS wires. i'd insert a picture but i can't figure out how. i don't think this is something from the factory at all. i tested for current as well at the connector in the passenger side corner under the hood with the two wires (same color, gray/red stripe and blue/orange stripe) and found nothing. all the testing i did with the key on engine not running, key off, and with the car running and using a test light which i'm not sure would work if the current amount was small enough that it wouldn't be picked up. i know the test light worked as i checked my grounds on the battery multiple times. i'm about ready to just let the shop handle it unless somebody else has an idea on what the hell is going on here. i have pictures but just need to know how to upload them or if i could e-mail them to someone who cold help. sorry for the essay guys, just really lost on this one. thank-you in advance for any help!

that tin foil looking stuff is most likely a noise reduction covering -- picture if you will, much like a coaxial cable...
more than likely the current passed through the CPS only goes high when the sensor passes next to it (induction)
edit: btw, i just did a search on that code, and there's a TSB for the newer 3 valves, but i couldnt find much on 2v's. i say take it a reputable shop.
the TSB says something about the generator. so i'm wondering if maybe the alternator could somehow be causing noise in the system?

It's DC resistance should be 250 to 1kΩ.
BTW, the official abbreviation for the cam position sensor is CMP so as to distinct from the crank position sensor, CKP.
Also, as "zero" said, a worn, electrically "noisy", generator has been known to create apparent CMP problems...

All I'm saying is I have personally used aftermarket ignition parts that aren't nearly as good as the OEM parts. I'm glad you two have had good luck with your parts and sucks for me to have had a bad string. It was just my opinion. Did you figure out your issue yet?

not yet, its going to the shop tommorow. got to get it fixed for upcoming inspection. the last thing i could think of is since the alternator was replaced with a remanufacutred one (ya i know i'm cheap) if that would still cause the same problem that it created in the first place.
