Default Weird problem with headlights/maybe multifunction switch

Hey all, first post.

I have recently acquired a 2004 Mustang GT and also acquired my first problem.

I was driving home last night when my roommate noted "your headlights suck." I noticed at this point the indication light for my brights was on, but my high beams were not on.

So when we stopped to get gas I noticed what I thought at first was my passenger side headlight out, but upon closer inspection the passenger headlamp was on, just not receiving full power.

Tonight when I had the free time, I inspected the headlights and found a wiring hack job on the sockets that plug in to the bulbs on both sides. So I got new sockets, soldered the wiring, shrink wrapped it, and now it looks OEM. I test the lights to see if that was the problem and it was not.

After scouring the internet I found one post on Yahoo answers about checking the "multifunctional" switch on the stalk attached to the steering column, but that is out of my electrical engineering capabilities.

A few posts on other forums with kind of similar problems on older model mustangs suggested checking the grounds, so I did and they seem fine.

Fuses are all in tact. I just have one very very dim headlight, one that works fine, and my indicator light for my high beams is on, but my high beams are not on.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve

Could it just be the bulb? Switch bulbs between left and right and see if that solves it?

Is the highbeam switch on (multifunction stalk forward)? (trying to ascertain why the HB indicator is on here)

I had a similar issue with my TransAm and ended up re-engineering a lot of the headlight wiring (a very common issue on 3rd gen Camaros and TAs)... but I am almost certain our Mustangs are wired differently than those were.

I agree with Boris.

I would try a new bulb to see if it fixes it.Try the cheaper route first before pulling column apart

I bought a new headlight today and installed it. Now the indication light for the high beams is off, and both head lights are dim.

I think I'm about at the end of my mechanic expertise here.

Does your battery have enough juice?

Do the other lights work? (fog, interior, brake/tail)

Does your horn work?

There is a fuse box in the engine compartment near the battery... fuse 1 should be a 15A, and fuse 15 should be a 10A, and there is a 20A fuse that isn't identified on my paper that all play some part in the working of the lights ... I will look on mine tomorrow when I get a chance.
