Help with a new GT

Help with a new GT
Whats up people, I got a new 2001 GT and I'd like a lil help to make the job of running down a EVAP leak easier. I have already replaced the fuel cap and grommet for the filler neck because it had ripped in half. I still have the check fuel cap light on and still smell a hint of gas now and then.
Also when I start to fill the tank up it will over flow almost immediately unless I fill slowly to start with.
I'm thinking this is the reason behind my abysmal fuel mileage. I'm LUCKY to get a 20MPG fuel economy driving slowly.
Does anyone know if there are any common places to start checking for EVAP system leaks, or a common reason for poor fuel mileage (replaced the plugs already and got a new air intake coming next week)? The power is higher than expected too, My friend has a GT and mine for some reason is noticeably faster than his.

nah the only true leak i could find was at the gas tank where the grommet had cracked, the GT only have 87,000 miles and was garaged in Florida all it's life. Filler tube was in good shape too, not even a scratch on it.

did you reset the computer/clear code yet? if not, do so by disconnecting the negative side of the battery and let it sit for 10 minutes. drive for 15 minutes to let the computer to re-learn values.
you can also change and read spark plugs (look for signs of lean/rich/too cold plug etc), change fuel filter.
one shop tried charging me 600+ for a stupid evap leak.

The car's already had a full tune up, got the new intake on today, I still need to get a new fuel filter though. Already cleared codes with both battery reset and deletion by OBD2 scanner, and drove about 150 miles.
The plugs when changed showed the engine running Pretty good, not rich or lean, about right where it should be. That's why I believe there is a large enough EVAP leak to be having most my fuel evaporate away while sitting.
