Default Radiator fan not coming on

I got back home from a hard drive into town and back and as I was pulling into the garage I started to smell an electrical burning smell and just as I went to shut it off white smoke was coming from under the hood. I shut it off and popped the hood and the smoke was coming from all around the fan motor. A day later I started the car up and let it warm up. At the point where the temp got high enough to where the fan should have kicked on nothing happened. The temp continued to climb and when the gauge reached almost to the "L" in the word normal the fan started to smoke bad again so I shut it off. Being kind of new to this type of issue I can only assume that the fan motor has gone bad and when the smoke is coming from when the fan tries to kick on high? I'm not sure. I don't want to replace the fan and that not be the issue. The coolant level is all the way up and it looks clean.

Anything that could have caused it besides being old? Hows this one for a replacement?
