So, I am gonna do the short throw shifter this weekend. It was said that if I am gonna do this, I might just as well replace the transmission fluid and fill from the top and not the side.

So.....persay, I take the plug out of the transmission, drain it, put the plug back in, and then pull it off the ramps / stands and pull the top off the shifter. I can fill it from the top, but how do I ensure I don't over fill it?

 

That is by far the easiest way to refill the trans. Your question has an easy answer, the parts store can tell you exact fluid capacity so you just buy that amount and then dump it in through the top. Easy as pie. I hope the shifter works well for ya.

 

you wont regret the MGW, that shifter is so versatile and has a great feel. Best on on the market yet in my opinion.

 

I don't remember exactly when I did mine but the capacity was like 3.15 quarts or so..it was not a nice even number to where you could only buy that much. You will have some left over.

The fill plug is also located on the side of the transmission (driver's side I think for the T45). When I replaced my fluid, I think I left the fill plug out and poured the fluid in from the shifter area. Once I got to the capacity, fluid started dripping out from the fill plug.

When I go to do the shifter, I want to do the fluid, but I certainly don't want to have the car on ramps and jackstands while I am in the car trying to put the shifter in. I just would rather not risk tipping the car over.

So I am trying to figure out how I am gonna do it.

Can I put it on ramps, put the jackstands on it, empty it. Then take it off the jackstands, fill it, do the shifter, put it on. Then drive it back up onto the ramps and jackstands, then pull the fill plug off and let the excess drain out?

Whats the harm in over filling and then starting it, driving it on ramps and then draining the excess?

Honestly, I am a bit of a bigger guy, so getting under a car when its sitting on the ground probably wont happen. I doubt I can get to the fill plug too well putting the front on just jackstands.
