Default Exhaust sound is annoying....Help!

My other Mustang I had sounded great. I'm not exactly sure what was on the car because someone installed everything before I bought it. I do know it had shorty headers, an H pipe with high flow cats, and flowmaster mufflers. Im not sure of the brands for the cats, headers or H pipe. I know the mufflers were one of the 40 series. Anyway, that car got rear-ended and Totaled!!

So I bought another Mustang. I love it except the sound and I know nothing about exhaust. Now whats different about this mustang is, It has stock manifolds. Someone added a 2 1/2 inch off road X Pipe that tapered down to a 2 inch pipe going to flowmaster mufflers.

The problem sound comes in around 2300 rpm and fades out around 2900 rpm It sounds good before and after that range. While its in that range, sounds kind of whiney, like an import exhaust, then goes away. I thought maybe the mufflers where shot or something so I listened to a soundclip of the flowmaster american thunder cat back system on a stock 4.6 mustang GT. To me, it sounded full and uniform. It didnt change tone like my car does. So I ended up getting it. Oh I also got the 2 1/2 inch system to match the x pipe.

Now, IT STILL HAS THAT SOUND!!!!! WTF can it be???? Is the X pipe making the tone change? or maybe because there are no high flow cats? Will the cats remove that tone from the 2300-2900 rpm range?

Thanks for any answers. I'm stumped.

I say ditch the cats and see if you like it better or not.

Right now it doesn't have cats. They were on my last mustang.

I believe its the x pipe. H gives a deeper sound, while x is more raspy

What you are describing is the dreaded exhaust drone. And one of the down sides of after market exhaust. It probably has more to do with the flow masters (drone masters) than the X pipe.

Sounds like exhaust drone to me. Flow masters are know to cause this.
