you definitely have to watch how much you spray on it. The K&N is just not worth the money or effort for a high mileage stock engine you're trying to get the most out of.

K&n filter oil is dyed red for a reason. It's to help you apply the correcyt amount. The correct amount is very little.
The oil will soak into the foam media easily and spread itself throughout the filter. The next time you oil a filter, Spray a small amount around the narrow end and stand the filter on its fat end overnight.
The next day, you'll see just how far the oil has spread itself throughout the media. If there are any uncoated areas, apply a tiny amount of oil.
You do not have to soak the damn thing in oil. I've been using K&N and similar filters for over 20 years and have NEVER had oiled MAF sensor or any other problem.
