Is the 2001 Saleen S281 n/a good for the road course?
I see a yellow 2001 Saleen S281 for sale locally. Naturally aspirated version. Mileage is 77,000 miles. Small dealership lead by a former professional viper road racer. He told me he could hear slight engine ticking a little while back and engine had been rebuilt. What is the deal with this car, don't know much about it, understand it is the n/a not supercharged version, I am good with N/A, less to go wrong. Is this car all looks or does it have improved suspension over stock GT, shocks, springs, front rear sway bars, subframe connectors? Also, I did notice it has Saleen labeled pulleys. 18 inch wheels. No big brakes. Is this a decent car to get for mostly daily driving and some road racing? I am a beginner. Price for car is something like $12,500. Is the mileage too high? How much life can I realistically expect for this car to last? Thanks, Ger.

^ Agree with the above. If you want or for whatever reason just have to have a Saleen, and an n/a one at that, then by all means do it. They are nice cars, but the bottom line is it's basically a GT with a body kit and a few very mild bolt-ons. The extra $$ that car commands over a GT is really just bragging rights.
You could save $4grand and get a GT in comparable condition, put the savings toward the suspension and brakes on the GT (both of which would need to be addressed on the Saleen anyway if you want to a/x) and come out ahead in performance and still have not spent what you would have on the Saleen.
