Default key problem

my keys for my 99 are missing. I have called around and am being told 400-700 dollars for new keys and reprogram.... I am not paying that for some keys to work. I understand the why they have to program new chip to car but I was wondering if I could do this myself for a lot cheaper? I have seen people program keys with other fords of the same year without original key simple but was wondering if and how it can be done with the 99 mustang.

For earlier Mustangs, like '96-'98 there is a way to program a new key yourself. But in order for that to happen you would need two things you currently don't - first, a '96-'98 Mustang and second is at least one working key.

My understanding for PATS programming for '99-up is it requires a programming device such as dealerships would have. But you know who also can do it is a mobile locksmith. I would go through your phone book and call some of those guys, should be a much more reasonable price. Although I did have a cut but non-programmed spare for the guy to use for cutting the new keys, I had two new ones done for $200 a couple years ago by a local locksmith after my kid lost the only working key I had for the car. And if you're a AAA member there is a discount available with many of them. You may be able to save a little more money buy buying new blank PATS keys off Amazon for the guy to use.

with the 99+ PATS cars, you need 2 working keys to program new keys (up to 8 total)

I find it hard to believe the Ford dealer will charge you 400$ for 2 new keys cut and to program (i left ford in 09 so maybe times have changed) Its either find a shop with an IDS or go to dealer/locksmith. Nothing you can do on your own

Locksmith is the best way, but they need the programmer.

I had exta keys made for my 2000 and my 2011 vert last year for 2 extra keys for each car was $350.00 with fobs for the 2000

For this exact reason, when I get my car tune updated, I am disabling the PATS.
