1996 4.6L is the engine worth it
#3
Goals and budget.... Lots to think about here.
5.0 pushrod swap, bit of a step backward and not something I'd pursue. 5.0's are great engines, I have one in one of my other vehicles but the 4.6 IMO is a much better engine and has much more potential. Stock casting 5.0 block is gonna snap in half at around 500rwhp, the 4.6 block is proven to hold about double. Not to mention all the other BS you'd have to deal with to make the swap happen - '94/'95 K member, your existing PCM would have to go, pretty sure you'd be looking for a new transmission (and driveshaft), there would be some wiring to figure out and probably also some fuel issues to figure out. I'm sure somebody out there has done it, so feel free to do some research to get a better idea of what's involved.
5.0 Coyote is a badass engine and the swap is very do-able; everything you need is out there to make it almost plug n' play. But in order to play you'll have to pay, unless you can find some smokin' deals this swap will easily run $10,000 if not probably more. For 420hp. Wanna build that engine at all beyond bolt-ons, the expense will make a 4.6 look cheap real quick.
So back to goals and budget. What do you want your car to do and how much can you see yourself spending to get there?

The pushrod 5.0L is working backwards. Just don't do it.
For the $10,000 you'll dump into a stock Coyote swap to get 400 hp, you can take your current 4.6L and make double the hp and still have enough left over for other mods.
