Default What to use the clean block for a head swap

Im doing the pi swap and, have machined heads so their near perfect. I clean one size with a fine wire brush in a drill, and cleaned the piston tops and the top of the block. It turned out good very clean and it didn't look like it did any damages. around the cooling ports there is was a lot of grime around. For a wire brush it seemed like it took a lot of work to remove it, but online people make it seem if it touches the block it will take divots out of it. What do you guys use?
