98 GT slight misfire in 2nd and 3rd. Could it be the crankshaft positioning sensor?

I am really hopeful that the voltage regulator is the culprit. I read online that the voltage should peak at some point below 15v under a constant increase in load. The voltage should peak around 1.5 - 2k RPM. If it climbs together with the RPMs and does not stop, then the VR is the problem. My hesitation happens mostly around 1.5 - 2k RPM.
Also, the hesitation started happening on the night when my battery suddenly got drained. I parked my car as usual and did not leave any lights on. Came back after a couple hours and the battery was dead. My friend had jump start my car. After I started driving the AC compressor clutch started engaging more often than usual and the hesitation first appeared.
Apart from testing the charging system I will also data log sensor voltages when running the car around the hesitation RPMs and see if there are any spikes or drops.
Finally, I checked my plugs today and one of them seemed moist, even though I used dielectric grease when putting the new wires. I don't know, maybe it was my plug socket thas was wet inside when took out the plugs.
Once again thanks for all your help. It's greatly appreciated.
