Default OIL

Question about oil.

I have a 98 it has 100k plus on it. The first 99,000 miles is unknown. I don't know how hard it was driven, if it was city or hwy, what type of oil or how often it was changed.

My driving is a Saturday or a Sunday cruise on the back roads of upstate NY in the summer months. It sits all winter. Very little mileage per year. Should I go with Synthetic or regular oil?

I've gotten feed back from alot of others, most said Royal Purple is great.

Thanks in advance

Royal Purple is good stuff but overpriced. I use and recommend Mobil 1 EP, 5/30, 6 qts of it and Motorcraft FL820S filter. Every 5K. You can get it all at Walmart for under $40.

There are a million opinions on this as far as brand and whatever go. Honestly any oil you use will be fine, at this point we're all victims of clever advertising.

Oil, will get you so (and say it like Commandant Lasard) "many Many MANY replies"

I have used Synthetic since it's introduction.

User Manual says:
Ford oil specification is WSS-M2C153-G.
Use SAE 5W-30 motor oil certified for gasoline engines by the American Petroleum Institute.
Do not use supplemental engine oil additives, oil treatments or engine treatments.

WSS-M2C153-G - ILSAC GF-2 API Certified

Can use a group 3 synthetic blend or better, but mobile 1 synthetics meet the
specification.

Like Z28 said, oil recommendations will be like a$$holes, everyone has one. As long as you change it regularly, you will be fine. In your case where its sits in the winter and very little mileage in the summer, change it every six months reguardless of mileage.

If the car is going to sit all winter, I would recommend that an oil change is the last thing you do before tucking it away. That way you have fresh oil sitting in the engine, not the old stuff which potentially has become acidic from use. I knew guys in both the MG and Triumph clubs who changed it in the spring as part of the summer start-up and no amount of reasoning with them could change their mind. I had never thought of it before until we had a rep in from Castrol to a club meeting and he said the fall change was best for a stored vehicle. Don't remember when that was but I had my MG and it was right around when Castrol first introduced the Edge oil, so well over 20 years ago now.

As for oil choice, in your case I would use a conventional oil (I preferred Castrol GTX) that meets the specification listed in the owner's manual and just change it every fall.

Just as an aside, regular coolant changes and bleeding of the hydraulics (every two years for the latter) will also ensure that you get many carefree summers of driving.

Synthetic oil, keep in it all year, change when summer comes.

Ford says 7500 miles, or six months, but can do 10,000, or one year. So,
you put the synthetic in, in the summer, store (start every 2 weeks at least!)
Then change summer again.

Never let a car sit idle for that long. Even I start mine up every week when not
in use for long periods of time. THIS is why you want synthetic, and not DINO.
