Tapping/Ticking noise...here we go again!
Hello Folks,
I have one of the most common issues in the book that i'm looking for a bit of insight on...
I bought this car about 2 weeks ago. It's a 2 owner car (both older folks, im in my 20's). After the past couple weeks of 2nd gear pulls, highway commutes to work, etc, i have developed a pretty significant ticking/tapping from what i have gathered to be coming from the bottom of the motor, drivers side, right by the drivers side cat.
I have a video attached showing the sound;
So far here is the list of possibilities i've gathered...car will be going up in the air Wednesday to give it a solid run through..
- Loose plug? I'm hearing these modular engines like to cough up plugs every now and again
- Cracked exhaust manifold? I tested the exhaust to find a leak and couldn't feel anything out of the ordinary near where the sound was coming from, but i do not recall checking the manifold itself
- The Cat itself...but when doing the exhaust test, plugged the tailpipes and couldn't feel any air escaping.
- Lifters? Or 'Lash Adjusters' as i am seeing them being refereed to as. (According to my vin, i have a Windsor motor, not Romeo).
Curious to see what some more experienced eyes/ears gather from the above, and the video.
Any insight is appreciated - thank you!

Haven't seen/heard the video since I'm at work without sound but, if the sound is coming from the bottom of the motor, you can rule out anything related to the valves (lash adjusters, lifters, etc) which are on the upper part of the motor.
Tick, most likely an exhaust leak. Exhaust manifold flanges, a weld seam or even a cracked manifold. If it's tapping or a knocking sound...rod bearing.

I hear the knock on that one, that does not sound good... That's a little more than a tap, more like a
wrap, somewhere in between a knock and tap... The plug would have to be in the cylinder too far
to make that contact noise... If at the cat, the honycomb piece would have to be loose, and
moving back and forth in the case with exhaust. That sounds mechanical...

Here’s to hoping I’m not totally screwed! 😂 let’s see what some other people have to say. 🤞
