Default strange noise...

hey guys, have a strange noise. it's high pitched. it goes with the engine rpm. don't hear it when idling. (it's an auto by the way) when i take off i start to hear it from 1500 - 2000 rpm. trans shifts ok. i thought maybe the water pump was going out. don't think that's it. then i thought the idler pulley, but i popped the hood & didn't really hear it in front of the engine. it's coming from underneath, back of the engine towards the tranny. like i said, it shifts ok. any ideas? it's driving me nuts cause i can't pinpoint the noise. thanks for the help.

What have you got done to the car? Is anything rubbing, is it in all gears at those rpms, or just you're lower 2? Maybe something is rubbing/grinding on the driveshaft... look around for metal scoring, just an idea to start at :-p

well i know my car idler pulley is bad and it has the same symptoms as yours. I can hear at around 2000 rpms but not while it is idling. I know this because my car likes to go through them like nothing before.

I had the same problem. It sounded like ball bearings grinding. I thought it was the alternator so i replaced it only to start it up and still hear the noise. Then i took it to ford and they couldn't find the prob. after an hour of looking so they didn't charge me. I was just about to change my water pump out when my uncle found out the noise was coming from the tensioner. I haven't replaced it yet though cause i am waiting for parts. If that isn't it i guess i will be replacing the water pump. Might as well go with an electric one.

thanks for the help guys. something i didn't think of, forgot about actually, the original serpintine is on it. it's very dried out. it's not split, but that's what i think it is now. if not that then the idler pulley. fixing what's wrong on a car is usually the easy part(usually), figuring out what's wrong is the hard part.
hey rustyshackle4rd, your pizza is ready.
