I would sugest using it since it came with it. It is a heat shield for a reason. I just installed one on my 04 Gt. I agree that it may appear diffrent but, You will get used to it. All the CAI's come with them so it must be needed.

The heat shield helps prevent the hot motor air from entering the filter. Thus allowing the CAI, that is cold air intake to use the colder outside air, as opposed to sucking in heated air... in essence the filter is being protected from getting too hot and thus eliminating the effect of putting the FIPK kit on.... All machs and cobras have a stock heat shield, so that should tell you something (albeit, its a piece of plastic , but still, its there)

Plastic is a better heat sink then metal is.

what do you mean you cant figure it out. that heat shield bolts between your filter and maf... just follow k&ns instructions and you should be fine... you might have to work at it a little bit to get that brace on the stud, but i dont see how you cant get the heat shield to work

He isn't asking how to make the heat shield work, hes asking if it is necessary to use.
