Pats Disable
#21
I just bought a 2001 GT that came with only one key. Bought a new blank and 4-button transponder for keyless entry from Amazon for $16. Brought the key to a local locksmith who cut and programmed the key for $50. Was able to program the keyless entry transponder for free with the other transponder.

First confirm that your PATS transponder in the steering column is not damaged in any way. My car was previously stolen and recovered and my transponder was in bad shape as the previous owner Mickey Moused it back together to run. I got a used transponder for my car with the same part number as the broken one in my column, I think that it is important to get what your car had from the factory. 1996 Mustang GT owners with PATS issues, I just resolved mine. I picked up a new PATS ignition cylinder off ebay and it came with 2 keys. Everyone says you need 2 keys to re-program the new keys. For my 96 no...I had no keys and was successful in programming both new keys myself in my yard. I found a program that can be made available to Ford owners who live too far from an authorized dealer. Insert one new blank into the ignition and turn to on position, theft light will begin to flash for about 15 minutes, when it stops flashing, turn the key off, then back to on position for another 15 minutes, when it stops flashing turn the key off, then back to the on position for the final 15 minutes. When theft light stops flashing, turn off and this time start your car. Do the exact same thing for any remaining keys and you're back on the road! I did both of my keys and have not had an issue for 3 months now. For a 1996 model the PATS is type A I believe, there are a few different types and this programming of the keys without an original works on the 1996 model year.Good luck
