Default 01 Brakes Problem

I bought my GT a few months ago and ever since I have had it I have had a strang problem with the brakes. The problem is that when I slow to a stop, as I get down to a really low speed (under 5mph maybe?), there is this grinding, almost crunching type noise. At the same time, there is a bit of resistance on the brake pedal, almost like it backs your foot off the brake. I had my friend's dad who is a former mechanic drive it, he had no idea what the problem was, but he thought it might have something to do with the ABS system (even though the ABS light has never come on when this happened). The car has about 50,000 miles on it and had been doing it ever since I bought it (about 3 months now). If anybody has any idea as to what might be the problem, your input would be greatly appreciated.

sounds to me like you may need to replace the pads. if youve been crunching the rotors for a while, you may need to get them turned, or possibly even replaced.

Mine do the same thing when I need new pads. It also means that you need to get your rotors resurfaced cause there are ridges in them. Most places resurface the rotors as part of the brake service.

probably because whatever little of the pad is left is enough to stop it from making steel to steel contact when pushing lightly, but when you are pushing hard, you are making much more contact with the rotor. trust me, my last car did this exact same thing, and under the same circumstances. get yourself some new pads, and if necessary, turn/resurface/replace the rotors.

if you have any doubts, just pop the wheels off and look.

I have a 2001 V6 and the ABS light keeps going "on" and "off". It will stay on for about 30 minutes while driving go "off" and then come back on again. Nothing in particular seems to make it come on either. In the morning it usually comes on after 15 minutes of driving. I have inspected the pads and rotors and they look to be in good shape. I also bled the brakes individually. Can anyone give me some tips on what else to try and do to correct this problem? Thanks

Take your car pull the e-brake, chock the passenger rear tire, take off the driver front wheel, check the brake pads.
