1996, whats it worth?
A friend of mine has a 96 black gt automatic. it has 118xxx on the clock. it needs a new exhaust and has a smack crack on the hood, probably 2 inches long. It has konig rims on it. cloth seats. what should he ask for it?
It's a higher-mileage (not bad for its age though), 12-year old"slushbox" with body damage and in need of repair before it will pass inspection in most states--those factors really kill it's value, if he's serious about selling then he should take the first reasonable offer in the $2k to $3k range. It might be worth slapping a cheap exhaust on there so that it will pass inspection, that will make a lot of buyers (the kind that would have to take it to Midas or the dealer) much more comfortable.
I think if it is otherwise clean, and will pass inspection, you will add $500 to what you'd get otherwise. However often it's not so much about how much more you'll get, but how much easier it will be to sell...I had my very well beat '92 Miata (it had 235k on it, 125k of which had been supercharged) in my yard for a month with a $2000 OBO sign on it--the heater didn't work (core leaked and was bypassed). Abunch of people looked at it and walked away. $75 (for the core and a gallon of antifreeze) and a bunch of underdash hassle later I sold it in two days for $2500(which is about $2k more than I would have paid)... Most buyers in the price range we're talking about (and can't DIY)don't want to buy cars that need repairs right off the bat--they'd much rather have it nickle and dime 'em to death "down-the-road" (pun intended).
