Help settle a dispute..
OK I have the opportunity to buy a car and my roomate and I are at odds over whether it's a good deal or not. Long story here. You've been warned.
Car is a 1996 Mystic Cobra with 55,000 miles. Excellent interior and exterior condition. Car has a K&N and flowmasters. Newer tires (not z rated but new). Bra. New shift ****. New window tinting. Original window sticker. New battery. Newer windshield. Original rims and some chrome ones that are on there now (look pretty good to me). Newer suspension, he put in shocks and springs.
The tachometer is inoperative and he disclosed that initially.
He was asking 10,200. I offered to pay that but after he fixed the tach. He was agreeable to this but mentioned if it cost much more than a couple hundred he would want me to share the cost. At this point I didn't commit one way or the other to that. We then took the car in and got the estimate on the tachometer (500, new cluster and install) and found out that the clutch is worn and needs to be replaced soon (estimated by ford 750-850).
I made him a final offer of 9,550 as is. Which essentially means he doesn't repair anything and just cuts the price down to cover half the cost of the repairs.
So, is my offer a fair one or am I lowballing? Do you guys think the car is worth more than I'm willing to pay or not? My roomate insists that, in part because it's a mystic, that I should be willing to fork over the 10,200 asking price even with the repairs that need to be done?

i wouldn't say that you're lowballing, imo. u could buy a new cluster online for around $300 give or take and just have ford program it, plus $800 for a new clutch install??? screw that. u can buy a new clutch and put it in yourself for around $300-350 if that. so 10,200-650=9550. sounds good to me! good luck man.
I'd say it's a good deal... yes, it's a cobra... yes, it's a rare color.... BUT it's still over 10 years old, starting to need things replaced and it is just a mustang...
so your offer is good, even if it makes you feel bad... if the guy is willing to take it then that's that.

If he refuses to take my offer of 9,550 then do you guys feel the car is worth his starting price of 10,200 even after finding out about the clutch? I went into this knowing about the tachometer from the outset. The clutch was a surprise. He didn't realize it was that worn.
depends how bad you want it.if you bought a new gauge cluster for 300.00 and a new king cobra clutch for 300.00 and did the work yourself id offer him 9900.00 thats more than fair offer. but if you want it that bad pay what he wantsand fix it yourself. id buy it i have a list of mustangs that i want to own and a 96 mystic cobra convertable with hard top is like 5 at my list but id settle for a low mile cobra coupe also!!!!! nothing like a 4 valve!!!!!
