Default gears

so i was wondering is it hard to install gears yourself or should i have a shop install it for me? because i got quote 450 for installation and to redo the pos trac
and i mean if it isnt that much of a hassle to do then i might as well put them in myself, but then again i imagine they are if there charging 450 to do it
can anyone help me out and tell me how difficult it is to install them?
thanks

Thats a pretty pricy install.

If you have another DD, or you can get a car lift i would do it.

It's really simple taking everything apart and putting it back to together.

The only hard part is the shimming. You need to find out the right pinion shim, then get the right backlash and the right gear pattern. if one of them is off after trying to do everything(within shiming the carrier), you need to reshim the pinion. I didnt have all the tools when i did it so it was pretty hard to do. But if you have the right tools, it can be done.

IF you trust yourself, or feel like you are somewhat of a home mechanic you can do it.

THe shimming is what scared me when I did the gears on my former '93 LX. I don't remember how much they charged me for them though.

What gears do the '04's come with? Or is a few diff gears they come with.

i just did it i thought the hardest part was getting the c-clips around the s-spring for the limited slip if you got ford racing the stock shims for the diff housing on each side should be fine just make sure you keep them on the right side and the pinion shim sould be just about dead on i think when i messuredthe pinionit was like .002 to the top of the teath so i got a ship .002 smaller and them just make sure your rolling torque is 25 in pounds and the backlash is .004-.009then toraueit and you should be good

When installing gears, is it easy to rebuild the whole setup if you're peg legging and need to rebuild the assembly?

What would be needed to install gears without a lift?

Would I basically have to remove the whole rear assembly from the vehicle?

I'm paying 200 to get 31 spline axles, eaton diff,4.10's, and aluminum driveshaft installed. Its good to have a cousin thats a auto mechanic with a lift at his crib. Oh yeah I'm buying the Beer and pizza too!!!

for one rebuilding the diff wouldnt be hard but except for dealing with the s spring that keeps pressure on the clutches secondly all you need are some jack stands a dial indecator a torque wrench anda micrometer and no you dont need to take the rear end out of the car
