Default quick cam/spring question

my friend has an 01 gt with full intake, pulleys, stock exahust but with straight pipes, 3.73's and a diablo tune.

he's about to buy Comp Stg. 2 cams on ebay.

Does he HAVE to buy the titanium springs/retainers? i know that to take full advantage of the cams he needs to rev over 6k which isnt too good for the stock valvetrain but the install of the springs/retainers is like half of the cam install... so he wants to know will he be ok staying under 6k rpms.

Also, how mandatory is a tune after the cams, thanks.

He will need valvesprings, but titanium retainers are not required. The stock steel retainers are perfectly fine for what he's doing.

He will need a tune with those cams, as it won't idle well without one and will surge.

No, I'm saying he WILL need aftermarket valvesprings. What he will not need are the titanium retainers, as the stock steel are perfectly fine for him.

ok upon tell HIM that, this was his reply:

(he's starting to sound ignorant, i know)

"But im not gonna be revving past 6000 rpm so why would i need the valvesprings if even stock to bolt-on cars can do 6200-300"

i guess he's looking for an explanation.

Ramp rates on aftermarket cam lobes are MUCH more aggressive, along with duration specs. The shock to the valvesprings will be much more pronounce and they will fatigue much quicker.

The last thing he wants to do is drop a valve.
