Originally it did have a purpose. it was use to keep the car closer to the apex of the turn along with keeping up your exit velocity.

But when people began to see it in races the thought it looked cool/graceful/artistic w/e you want to call it and it took of as its own independent sport.

I am not saying its EASY to hold a 40* slip angle through a corner a 75+ mph because its not by any means.

IMO if you are just going to go out and pop the rear end around some corners on a road course thats not much of a challange.
^ Thats kind of what I interpreted when i started reading this thread.

Its not all ricers , two of the top drifters are ford and mopar . One has a 06 GT and the mopar guy has a viper, Im personally not into drifting but I would like to try it just to say I have. I think its a pretty kool sport and it does take some skill to keep them cars in the form that they are in while running at them speeds. If I ever won a Z06 at one of them walmart sweepstakes I would prolly try drifting or use it for auto X. Is drifting racing ? I dont think so , Its more like Gymnastics or even Dancing where form and looks are the biggest factors. Racing is where you could have a total butt ugly car with a built engine or a shiny show room brand new sports car, Use the performance, speed and skill to see who is faster and also who can reach the goal like first.

Iv drifted my car a few times for fun when it was raining. Its a nice rush but I just dont like buying tires alot so I kinda quit. But it does feel good to have the back end sliding at about 60 through long gradual turns.

While on this topic has anyone ever been on a skidpad for a test/tune.

Its a lot of fun. when I was at VIR me and some of the guys took out a rental truck f250 on the skid pad. I was shotgun. In these pics.

It actually wasn't as bad as I expected. The skidpad was wet enough that instead of flipping and dieing we would just slide around. But apparently the f250's front end does not hold camber as well as we had hoped.
