Default Fuel Pump Issues

I have a 04 gt, with 55,000 miles. I was told today by my mechanic that my fuel pump is bad and needs to be replaced. I have not had any problems with the car starting until the other day. The thing just wouldn't start. I assumed it was the fuel pump because i could not hear it turn on. The car was towed to the shop, and then it started as soon as the tow truck left. Go figure. It started the next 5 times, but eventually wouldn't start again. Anyone experience something like this before? Seems like a pump should last longer that 55,000 miles. I believe the diagnostic check told them it was the fuel pump. I trust my mechanic as i have taken cars to him for years. Is it possible I just got a crappy factory pump?

You could check your schrader valve to see if you have fuel pressure. It could also be a fuel pump relay going bad if you don't always have fuel pressure. I don't trust mechanics because I work around so many and know their game.
Oh yea, I was once a mechanic.

it sounds like you don't trust you technician, most reputable shops will not charge you for the repair if they mis-diagnosis the problem.

and yes the fuel pumps do fail, when was the last time the fuel filter was changed?
