The OEM shifter requires that you "horse" the lever around between gears, the MGW requires much less of this jockeying around between gears--in fact it will fight you if attempt to shift it like the monkey-motion OEM unit.

1st to 2nd is straightback with a bit of pressure toward your right knee (just a bit), 2nd to 3rd is just push forward but let the centering spring force the lever to the right a BIT.

3rd to 4th is straight back, don't let the centering spring have it. 4th to 5th requires a bit of movement to the right through the neutral gate.

5th to 4th is straight back, let the spring move the lever toward the center and in to 4th.

4th to 3rd is straight forward, 3rd to 2nd is pull back, let the centering spring do the work, 2nd to 1st is push forward with a bit of pressure to the left.

If you let it, it will pretty much shift itself.

I get the wind, but I also have some trans problems, so don't go by me. As far as the shifter, I've never had problems with missing gears with it, other than 3rd where my synchros shot.

Dude.. i put a new shiftknob on my car, and i had to re-learn how to shift hahaha... its funny how the little things effect you so drastically..

but +1 on waiting for the shifter to break in.. i drove my friends GT when he first put in his mgw and i HATED it.. i havent driven it since, but i bet its perfect now
