Default Catalytic Converter Problem

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and need a little advice. I have a 2003 Mustang GT with several mods, including a catted SLP X-Pipe. My car was in the dealership yesterday (check engine light was on) and they told me one of my cats was shot. They quoted me $1600 or something ridiculous, so I need to know what my other options are. Can I buy just 1 replacement cat for my aftermarket part? Or do I have to buy a whole new X-Pipe? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Call up SLP or send them a e-mail. Their site is www.slponline.com

You should be able to buy 1 cat from them. Where at in IL are you?

Dealer is quoting you for an OEM replacement...

+1 on contacting SLP they will either be able to sell you a cat or can tell you who offers a cat that will be a replacement. If you have one of the universal type cats like this, Pypes offers them individually.

I would never trust the dealership number one, as most do not retain any good mechanics. I am not saying that there are no dealerships with good mechanics, I am just saying most do not in my experience. I would only have work done at a dealer, due to warrenty coverage issues. I went to a dealer once because the check engine light came on for the converter Auto Zone scanned it for free for me. I promptly went to the dealer for warrenty coverage, and they told me that there was nothing wrong with my converter. I then went to the shop that does all my performance work, and he ran a probe on the converter's. One converter was like 400 degrees, and the other was like 800 degrees! We new the converter was clogged, just from a test that took all of about five minuites to do. I was a a dealership once, and an old lady came in to have her third brakelight changed. I sat across from her and the service manager, as he told her that it would cost her $150.00 dollars to change it for her. I heard her voice crack as she explained that she would have to use her credit card, because she did not have the cash. As msoon as he heard she would use her credit card, he recomended getting her brakes done and an oil change. The service guy got up and left so she could think about it, I went over and told her to leave right away. I told her if she bought the bulb down the street at Autozone, I would change the bulb for free. I also gave her the number of my mechanic to have her brakes checked, which she did and they were fine. The woman saved my friends number, and eight years later she is still going to him to have work done. I would have it double checked to make sure, before you go and order a converter.

Good Luck............

i agree... there are some dealerships out there with real good mechanics, but there are way too many that try to screw you any way they can. these stories are all too common. and it sucks for the people that know nothing about cars.

a while back my wife's old car needed a new belt, she called me when i was out of town and said that she could hear a funny sound under the hood and she looked and the belt was starting to shred on the side closest to the engine. so i told her to take it to a mechanic and see how much they would charge to replace it. she took it to the dealership and called me about 30 minutes later, put the guy on the phone and he tried to explain to me why they wanted to charge $250 to change a belt on a Chevy Cavalier! fortunately she told them not to work on it until i gave the go ahead, i told him to go f*** himself and to get my wife her car back so she could take it to a real mechanic.
