H-pipe = Muscle car, lower exhaust note, power focused in the mid-range;
X-pipe = NASCAR, higher exhaust note, power focused in upper mid-range to redline;

For the OHC 4.6L engines the X-pipe will produce the most satisfying power curve, this is why they are so prevalent/dominent in the marketplace.

A lot of people tend to like the x pipe with straight through mufflers and the h pipe with chambered exhaust I believe. But if you are going catted I don't think this theory makes a huge difference.
