Time for new Rear Tires but how wide can I go?
I've always been a fan of the fat, rubber hanging over rim "meaty" tire look. I currently have a pair of fryed 245-45-17's on an pair of 8.5's, and would like to know how wide and what size I can go with. Keeping in mind the wheel well clearance, and overall Street drivability. I was thinking 285-45-17's but idk if they would even work on that rim.

ok, I did a little research and was thinkin about buying 2x 10.5 wheels for the back and using like a 305-35 tire but i don't know if 35 will fill the wheel well and not have clearance issues. i was going to stay with 245-45 for the fronts but i dont want the backs to look smaller...thanks for the input guys.

if you can find the wheels in 10.5, just get 315 35 17's and roll your fenders to relieve the clearance issues. And since your car is a cobra, get at least a nice solid street tire or nitto d/r's.

If you look at the underside of your wheel well, you'll see that the fender has a slight lip that goes inside the wheel well. That tends to be sharp-ish and will slice gashes into the sidewall of the tire if youre not careful. Friend did that with his wheels that i now bought with a previous set of tires that were 315 30 18's. But its a harmless job to do if a professional does it and then you wont have to worry about cutting into your tires.

I ran 295/35-18 on stock ride height with no rubbing issues, 315 isn't that much wider. If you're pretty lowered, roll the fenders in... otherwise you shouldn't have problems.
Actually, come to think of it, my former roomate ran 315 width DRs on 18" saleen wheels (same ones I had) lowered with the eibach sportlines (how low can you go hahah) and the rears never rubbed.

It also depends on which body style you have. The SN95's have more problems with this than new edges. Just saying cus thats what the OP has. My wheels came off an SN95 lowered with sportlines and they cut them tires up SO bad with 315 30 18 drag radials...bfg's to be exact. So that shows you that SN95's have more problems with it than new edges.

nope
Don't put such a tire on less than a 9" wheel for proper fit, wear and response in the corners. It is just a waste of the tire width.
