What's the consensus on buying used gears?

well if i had a shop i would be able to do it, but ive done it at my house and his house and my dad would kill me if i did another install (left my garage a mess for a couple days) maybe at his house haha. the first time i didnt but now i drop the rear axle and do the whole install out of the car... much easier...i was using royal purple but it is so overpriced, i bought redline at downs ford in toms river for half the price of RP and it has friction modifier in it, i also used 80-140 which was recommended by Rick at downs who is the ford racing manager. they call for 75w but he said the 80w holds up better, i also installed a girdle on my rear and man what a difference it made i highly recommend getting one...the 4.30s that i installed in fizzics boy's stang we set the back last at .010 and made no noise but the .006 worked for my 4.10 gearset....i asked my gf's dad who owns his own shop and is heavily into racing and he said he always sets the backlash on the tighter side, he also helped me install the 373s since it was my first time hp so you know it was done correctly haha but that set was set at .010 too

Awesome ^^^
I'll take those gears.
I was going to buy new gears from downsford since they were having a special. I actually spoke with rick telling him i would call him tuesday. But i'll take my chances with your gears. Maybe ill get the gear oil from him. I dont want to spend the $15 per quart on the royal purple either...

On something like gears, you wouldn't know you got screwed until it is too late. Gears may have spent life on a track being beat to death. On parts that have to have such a close tolerance to be correct, you might not be able to tell if they were worn excessively just by looking.
Let me know what you end up doing. I got fuct on my taxes this year and instead of getting to throw a grand into my baby, its now down to less than 600 bucks. Been hammering eBay, Craigslist, and places alike to find some deals. When it comes to horsepower, there are no deals...lol
