The wires are new mallory 9mm's and all are firing full power and within their ohm limits. The plugs have maybe 2000 on them. Any ideas how to check the coil so i can check them. They are the top of the line MSD's. It runs great in 1-4 regardless of the load but as soon as it goes into 5th it skips horriably.

This is probably not at all relevant, and the "test" below will sound a bit odd, however I had similar problems with a set of fat Mallory wires on my 15psi '92 Miata. Went nuts tracking it down and finally got a new set of NGK "blue" wires (a favourite with the NA Miata crowd)--the problem went away.

With the engine at normal operating temp, at night, open the hood and look for arcing from the coils/plug wires. Rev the engine a few times and see what things look like.

Even if you see no arcing, buy a cheap set of plug wires from a FLAPS and try those.
